"Pl. 290 Quinquina a grandes feuilles"

This sharp stipple engraving was included in Flore Medicale… a French book about plants of medicinal use.  The multi-volume publication was illustrated with images by Pierre Jean Francois Turpin which were engraved by Lambert, and authored by F. P. Chaumeton, J. L. M. Poiret, and J. B. Chambert.  This "Nouv. publication" was published in Paris in 1828-1832 by C. L. F. Panckoucke.

“Pierre Jean Francois Turpin (1775-1840) was possibly the greatest natural genius of all the French botanical painters of his day….In particular his drawings of botanical details have rarely been surpassed.” (Blunt, The Art of Botanical Illustration pp180-181) He collaborated with Alexander Humboldt and with the botanist Pierre Antoine Poiteau . Turpin’s great skill and preferred technique of stipple engraving prompt experts to favorably compare his work to another great French painter of flowers, Pierre Joseph Redoute.
