"College Hall

Wonderful early 20th century etching by Ernest D. Roth (German-American 1879-1964). This original etching was just one of six views of the University of Pennsylvania, included in a portfolio printed by the University of Pennsylvania Press in 1929, an edition of about 100 or less.

Born in Germany, Roth immigrated to the States as a child. His artistic career began at night school (as he had to work during the day). He studied etching under the renowned James D. Smillie. Disappointd that his work was not selling, Roth toured Europe concentrating on his etchings of architectural subjects, and upon his return to the States, exhibited frequently throughout the country winning many awards, including the prestigious First prize for Architectural Subject from the Chicago Society of Etchers and the J. Sanford Saltus Prize from the Salmagundi Club.
