"Merchant's Exchange"

John Caspar Wild (c. 1804-1846), published a series of depictions of Philadelphia in 1838 entitled, Views of Philadelphia and Its Vicinity. The views are charming, small scale descriptions detailing the city's prosperity, growth and surfeit of beautiful buildings.  The work was so successful that it was reissued between 1840 and 1848 by J.T. Bowen, then the preeminent publisher and lithographer in the city. He removed Wyld’s name from the prints. This edition is known for its especially beautiful color.

Hand colored lithograph.
9 ¾ x 12 3/8 inches, sheet.
Very good condition save small old repair tear in far top left margin
