after Rothermel, "United States Senate A.D. 1850," Pub: Philadelphia, 1855. $2,850. Print
Peter Rothermel American historical engraving US Senate Civil War debate

“The United States Senate A.D. 1850, The Engraving from the Original Picture is respectfully dedicated to the People of the United States by the publishers.”

One of the finest examples of 19th century American engraving, this large folio engraving after the painting by Peter Frederick Rothermel, depicts the Senate’s deliberation over the 1850 Compromise. Featured are the three distinguished American orators of the mid 19th century: Henry Clay of Kentucky, Daniel Webster of Massachusetts and John C. Calhoun of South Carolina in their last great debate in the Old Senate Chamber. Webster called the compromise to preserve the union, while Calhoun argued that the Union could only be preserved if Northerners respected Southern institutions including slavery. Clay has the floor in his last significant act as a senator, Calhoun is depicted third from the left and Webster is seated with head in hand. An historically significant American engraving.

Uncolored engraving,

27 ¼ x 33 ¾ inches, sheet
