R.L. Barnes. “12 Miles Around Philadelphia.” No. 27 South 6th Street, Philadelphia: R.L. Barnes, 1858.
Barnes created striking and unusual presentation of the city in the round. This colorful and decorative map places the grid plan of downtown Philadelphia at the center of the image. The map extends west to Haverford and Radnor, north into Springfield, Cheltenham and Abington, east into the New Jersey’s Burlington County, and south into Gloucester County. Streets, major buildings, and the Center, Rittenhouse, Independence, Franklin and Washington Squares are all shown. The mapmaker emphasized the railroad lines, bridges, and falls that were so important to the development of manufacturing and to the growth of the suburbs. Lithograph with hand coloring. 22 ¾ x 22 ¾ inches, sheet. Excellent condition.
