John Marshall ( 1755-1835) was the longest serving Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court. During his tenure of over 3 decades the court establed the principal of judical review, giving the courts the power to strike down laws that are unconstitutional. Marshall served in the Virginia House of Representatives and as Secretary of State before being nominated by John Adams to the Supreme Court.
