Valk and Schenk. Insulae Americanae... Amsterdam, c. 1694. $2500 |

After Jan Jansson. "Insulae Americanae in Oceano Septentrionali…" Amsterdam: Valk and Schenk, c. 1694.
A wonderfully decorative chart created by Jansson in 1636 with information that continued to be useful for ¾ of a century. The elaborate decoration surrounding the title and the scale of miles and the windroses and sailing ships plying the seas are hallmarks of the sea atlases produced by the great Dutch publishers of the period.
The chart is centered on the Gulf of Mexico. It shows the southeastern coast of North America from the entrance of the Chesapeake Bay in the north, south to Florida and including the Texas and Louisiana coasts into Mexico. The islands and shoals off the coasts of Central America and the northernmost portions of South America, Cuba, Jamaica, Espanola (Haiti and Santo Domingo) Puerto Rico and the Bahamas and the Lesser Antilles are shown in considerable detail. The southeastern portion of Florida is depicted in the manner popularized by the Dutch mapmaker Joannes Delaet with the coast south of “Cabo Canaveral” and “Pta S. Lucia” on a straight line south to the tip.
Hand colored copper engraving. 24 ½ x 20 inches, sheet. Very nice condition.
