"Little Compton the Seat of Sr. Richard Howe Bar.t"
This delightful engraving was one from a series of prints describing in detail the seats of the English nobility. The volume entitled, La Nouveau Theatre de la Grand Bretagne, contained doublepage engraved views of English estates by the Belgian artist Johann Kip (1653-1722). "Kips' Views" as these prints are commonly called are usually drawn at an oblique angle from an imaginary vantage point above the ground. The engravings are beautiful and faithful representations including surrounding auxiliary buildings, formal gardens, deer parks, farm lands, rivers and streams, and the villages that sprang to life around these magnificent manor houses.
Copperplate engraving with modern hand color 21 x 16 3/4 inches, sheet. Very nice condition save small residue of glue in upper margin.
