Pag. 158 no.2 "Parade au Trot a Gauche / Au Trot a Droite" William Cavendish (1592-1676) First Duke of Newcastle-upon-Tyne set up a riding academy in Antwerp in the mid 17th century, training horses in the art of equitation. He wrote about his theories and his techniques and published an influential volume in 1657-58. His treatise was so popular that it was re-issued in London, in 1667, in 1737 and again in 1743 with different titles English and French titles and texts: including, A New Method and Extraordinary Invention to Dress Horses (Methode et Invention Nouvelle de Dresser Les Chevaux) and A General System of Horsemanship in All Its Branches. The Duke’s book contains over forty engravings of dressage and various aspects of horse movement and training. Copperplate engraving with modern hand color. 13 1/2 x 16 inches sheet size.
