James Ellsworth De Kay (1792-1851) was a noted American zoologist. Although trained as a physician, he did not practice medicine. De Kay’s early fascination with the natural world prevailed and he devoted his life to studying, cataloging and describing biological specimens. His passion resulted in the publication of a multi-volume scientific work entitled, Zoological Report of the New York State. The lithographed illustrations of native North American shells are particularly well drawn and accurately hand colored.
