“The Duffer” Arthur Burdett Frost (American 1851-1928) was largely a self-taught artist. His love of sport and his sound draftsmanship and intimate knowledge of nature combined to make him one of the greatest illustrators of rural America. He found work as an in-house illustrator at the New York Graphic” as well as at Harpers Weekly. Frost illustrated over ninety books, including those by Lewis Carroll, Charles Dickens, Teddy Roosevelt, and Mark Twain. He delighted in treating his characters with humor. His drawings displayed a directness and honesty which showed his sympathetic understanding of his subject. Frost chronicled aspects of American cultural life for over five decades, to the delight of millions. Tinted photolithograph 15 x 11 inches sheet size. Excellent condition.
