Lawn-Tennis Tournament at Newport”
A lively scene of onlookers outfitted with bowlers and parasols watching the action on the court at the Casino. The artist C.D. Weldon captured the scene of the second annual National Lawn Tennis Tournament. While the Casino had only been constructed three years before it had already become so integral to the lives of the elite summering in Newport that the accompanying text asks the reader “What Newport did before it had its Casino is a parallel question to the unsolvable conundrum, What did the world do before it had lawn tennis?’ Indeed!?! The text also describes the progress of Messiers, Sears, Van Rensselaer, Renshaw, Thorne, Conover, etc. through the rounds of play.
