"Camellia Drouard Gouillon" This beautiful image of a camellia is a striking example of the supremacy of the French in the field of botanical illustration and another instance in which a benefactor, skillful artists and engravers, and an experienced publisher combined forces to create works of spectacular beauty. The Italian born Berlese, was the world's leading authority on camellias. He commissioned the French artist J. Jung to draw the hundreds of varieties of camellias growing in Berlese"s expansive gardens and hothouses. This artist, in collaboration with a team of skilled French engravers and an experienced Parisian printer, produced stipple engravings that were so brilliantly colored and finely engraved that the works rival those of his illustrious contemporary, Pierre Joseph Redoute. This is one of 300 beautiful images of which were included in the definitive monograph. 11 x 14 inches, sheet size. Stipple engraved plates partially printed in color and finely finished by hand. Excellent crisp impression. Full margins. Complete with sheet of text. |
