Crispin de Passe, Pl.15 (Poppy) Hortus Floridus, Amsterdam 1614-15, $1,050 Print
Crispin de passe botanical artist dutch 17th century poppies

Tab. 15  (Poppy)

Crispin de Passe, a contemporary of Basil Besler, took an entirely different approach to his early 17th century work on flowers, producing one of the most celebrated and imitated of the early florilegia, Hortus Floridus.  This work had a lasting influence on 17th century gardening.  Arranged according to the seasons, it was published in 1614 in four languages (to maximize its audience).  This was a flower book full of spring blooms such as tulips, narcissi, hyacinths, fritillaries, primulas and irises. Its small format and de Passe’s charming engravings of flowers found in Northern European gardens at the beginning of the 17th century, make these engravings hard to resist.

Copperplate engraving with modern hand color. Matted and framed to museum specifications.

15 1/8 x 18 1/8 inches framed size.

Excellent original condition.
