A marve;lous 1876 view of the building that is now The Please Touch Museum "Our Centennial - Memorial Hall - President Grant Declaring the Exhibition Open"

This detailed antique wood engraving depicts the enormous crowd of people who braved the rain to attend the opening of the great Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia. The opening ceremonies were held on steps and in front of Memorial Hall, the building that served as the art gallery for the exhibition and was first home of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. President Ulysses S. Grant was the master of ceremonies and officially opened the exhibition.
