Armillary Sphere and Stands, English c. 1780. $125. Print

Armillary sphere with two stands engraving c. 1780 (Untitled)

The armillary sphere was the principal instrument used by all mathematicians and astronomers to determine celestial positions before the 17th century and the invention of the telescope. It was an ancient instrument used by both Greek and Chinese scholars. The instrument was fashioned with interlocking and over lapping rings (armilla) which were moveable and adjustable for the seasons. The rings illustrated the circles of the sun, moon, known planets, and important stars. This engraving shows an armillary sphere on a carved wood four legged base. Two additional decorative bases are featured.

Copperplate engraving on laid paper, hand colored.
6 3/4 x 8 1/2inches sheet.
Excellent condition, folds as issued.
