Thomas Cowperthwait and S. Augustus Mitchell were the two principal publishers of American lithographic atlases in the mid 19th century. Their maps are highly regarded for their detailed information and quality. Insets in the upper right include including the population of Maine's principal counties and towns in 1840 and 1850. A smaller inset shows the population at different dates throughout the preceeding century. Railroads, stagecoach routes and canals are also shown. This map is being sold with the elaborately illustrated and hand colored titlepage of the atlas. 17 x 14 inches, sheet. Hand colored lithograph. The map is in good condition with light overall patina. The titlepage has some staining. |
