Plate IX
Original aquatint engraving taken from Samuel Lysons' An Account of Roman Antiquities discovered at Woodchester... published in 1797. Lysons (1763-1819) was a man of many talents. He was a respected barrister, the Keeper of the Tower of London Records, an antiquities scholar, as well as a talented engraver and publisher. His large folio volume documented in thirty four hand colored aquatints the antiquities discovered in Woodchester, Glouchestershire. The 18th century excavation in Woodchester revealed the remains of a magnificent Roman villa. Lysons' engravings detail sections of the mosaic floor called the "Great Pavement."
