Clark, I. "The Town of Montrose" London: Smith & Elder, 1824. $1250 Print

Clark, I. <i>"Montrose"</i> London: Smith & Elder, 1824. $1250 A lovely view of the seaside port of Montrose, on the east coast of Scotland.   The artist, engraver and publisher successfully combined forces in this skillful exploitation of the medium of hand colored aquatinted engraving. The net effect is to replicate the effect of a pure watercolor painting but with great detail and marvelous textures.  The print presents a serene view of the town as it appeared at the beginning of the industrial revolution.  A few warehouses and a smokestack are clustered around the dock in the background, sailing ships of all types and sizes ply the bay, and a farmer herds cows in the foreground.

25 x 31 inches, overall.
Hand colored aquatinted engraving.
Excellent condition.
