"A New Map of the Island and Kingdom of Corsica by Thomas Jefferys Geographer to the King"
Large detailed map of the island of Corsica by one of the great cartographers of the British Empire Thomas Jefferys, and published by the firm of Laurie and Whittle in London in 1794. The Mediterranean island of Corsica, located north of Sardinia, has a long and exhaustive history of occupation. It was originally settled by Etruscans and Phoenicians, conquered and occupied by Romans, overrun by Goths, Franks, and Saracens, battled over and prized by the Republic of Genoa, sold to the French in 1768, and occupied by the British from 1794 through 1796 and again in 1814 to 1815. Published in 1794, the year of British occupation, the map is replete with topographical information and typical of the great degree of detail that Jefferys was famous for. A lower cartouche describes "The great Range of Mountains which rises beyond Alleria and stretches unequally across the Island, divides it into the Country which is called di qua monti or on This Side of the Mountains and di la monti or on the Other Side of the Mountains. This is the natural division of Corsica."
28.5" x 21.25" sheet size copperplate engraving with original outline color. Clean and crisp impression slightly time toned, otherwise very good condition.
