Le Pautre, Jean Bassin de Versailles Paris 1673 $900. Print
Le Pautre, Jean Bassin de Versailles Paris 1673 $900.

"Deux Amours de Bronze, qui se jouent avec une Escreuisse de mer, laquelle fait un Jet d'eau"
Folio size, uncolored copperplate engraving.

This original 17th century engraving details one of the many spectacular fountains found in Louis XIV's gardens at Versailles. The fountains, created by prominent French sculptors, exhibit the Baroque style in their use of classical mythology, cherubs and "grotto" settings, replete with sea life and encrusted shells. Jean Lepautre (1618-1682) was a prolific French designer and engraver who excelled at architectural subjects producing beautiful engravings of architectural decorations, friezes, ceilings, vases and all types of ornaments. Most of them were executed after his own drawings which exhibited a personal flair and imagination.

Copperplate engraving 21 x 15.5 inches sheet size. Clean and crisp impression with full untrimmed margins, excellent condition.
