Plate 26 "Fontana su la Piazza Farnese de Ser Sr. Duca di Parma"
Not just an architectural rendering and not just a city view, Giovanni Battista Falda created a set of wonderfully informative engravings of Roman life c. 1690-92. Published uncolored as illustrations to his Le Fontane Ne Palazzi e Ne Giardini di Roma con li Loro Prospeti et Ornamenti these engravings are original in their ability to capture the tempo of everyday Roman life. The Piazza Farnese is named after the magnificent palace built by Cardinal Alessandro Farnese in 1514 (today the French Embassy). The palace was considered the most beautiful Renaissance building in all of Rome in the 16th cenutry and viewing it across its open square with its lovely central fountain only enhanced the onlookers delight.
Copperplate engraving with modern hand color measuring 11 x 16 inches sheet size. Clean and crisp impression in excellent condition. |
