"Cerise Black Tartarian" A fruit specimen from Annales de Pomologie Belge et Etrange, edited by Alexandre Joseph Desire Bivort (1809-1872) with Lauren Seraph and Joseph de Bavay. Published in Brussells in 1853, the Annales was issued in parts over a period of seven years. It contained over 300 plates of the fruits cultivated in Belgium and on the continent. With its clear and informative illustrated plates and detailed text, the work quickly became a classic reference and as such influenced subsequent pomological texts. Bivort was a nurseryman who was particularly interested in the propogation of pear trees which thrived in the northern European climate and he developed many new varieties of pears. Although simply presented on the page, each fruit is realistically drawn and hand colored. Lithograph with original hand color 13.5 x 10.5 inches sheet size |
