after Nicholas Scull and George Heap "A Map of Philadelphia and Parts Adjacent"" London: Gentleman"s Magazine, December 1777. The Gentleman"s Magazine editions of the Scull and Heap plan were arguably the most influential editions of the famous Scull and Heap plan of the city. The magazine issued reduced versions of the map as foldouts that were included in their popular periodicals and sold to customers in Europe and America. The detailed plan shows the planned development of the city between the Schuylkill and Delaware Rivers and much of the surrounding countryside extending from Derby(sic) and Merion in the west, Germantown and Oxford in the north, Tinicum Island in the south and parts of New Kersey including Haddonfield in the east. The map includes a great deal of detail concerning roads, inns, churches, Quaker meetings, mills, ferries and large landowners. It presented an enticing view to potential settlers. 15 3/8 x 12 " inches, sheet Copperplate engraving. Excellent condition but trimmed to plate on top upper right when removed from book. Complete with magazine which contained the map.
