No. 12 (Sunset scene with shepherds) London: Boydell, 1777. $175 Print

A lovely paastoral scene based upon the work of Claude Lorrain One view from a wonderful series of engravings of pastoral, architectural, marine and night scenes all based the upon the publisher's choice of the best of Claude Lorrain's work displayed by the Duke of Devonshire in his estates at Devonshire House and Chiswick. The atmospheric aquatinted engravings were created by Richard Earlom, one of the recognized masters of that specialized and time consuming medium. The publisher, John Boydell, is also well known and widely respected for the many high quality works he produced during the mid to late eighteenth century. The use of sepia ink complements the old world character of the subjects and sets the series apart from other romanticized views of the period. These views are particularly beautiful when framed using sepia tinted matting and antiqued gold moldings.

11 x 17 inches, sheet.
Aquatinted engraving.
Very good condition with light overall patina and scattered unobtrusive spots of foxing.
