"Philadelphia" London: The Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, 1840.
The aptly named Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge produced excellent maps of cities all over the world. This one of Philadelphia provides an enormous amount of easy-to-read detail including the important buildings, streets, canals, wharfs, ferry routes Among the landmarks recorded are the Naval Asylum, the US Arsenal, various prisons, the Navy Yard, city parks, the Fairmount Water Works, Girard College, the State Penitentiary, the Gas works, etc. A key below locates 96 other points of interest including synagogues, churches, museums, libraries, banks, etc. The decorative quality of the map is further enhanced by the additional of inset vignette views of the United States Bank, and the Merchant’s Exchange. Hand colored engraving. 16 ¾ x 13 ½ inches, sheet. Very good condition save small smudge in key at lower left and one spot of foxing at lower right.
