“Princeton University”
At the turn of the 20th century, Littig & Company commissioned the accomplished artist, Richard Rummel (1848-1824) to create watercolors of some of the nations’ most prestigious colleges. From these watercolors, copperplates were engraved and a limited number of engravings were produced. Unlike other college views of the period, the Rummel plates are glorious panoramic view of the entire campus. Art historians speculate that since the views appear to be drawn from an altitude of about 300 feet, it is likely that the artist worked from a balloon. There have been some nice, but more modern pulls from the artist’s original plate. This impression of the Princeton University campus is unusual, however, in that it was pulled from the plate in the original edition, circa 1910. It has been meticulously hand colored to bring out the wonderful detail of the engraved image. An uncolored line engraving in the bottom right of the margin provides a beautiful vignette view of the graduate college. Hand colored engraving. 22 ½ x 35 inches, sheet Excellent condition.
