James Queen. "Union Volunteer Refreshment Saloon of Philadelphia being the First Institution of the Kind in the United States Organized May 27th 1861" Philadelphia:T. Sinclair 1861.
More troops passed through Philadelphia during the Civil War than through any other city in the Union. Troops from the northeast arrived by boat and gathered at Washington Avenue waiting to board trains to take them south. A local grocer thought the men on their way to the front would appreciate food, drink and washing facilities during their short stay in Philadelphiia. The Union Volunteer Refreshment Saloon was formed, financed by private contributions and manned by volunteers. The names of those people connected with the organization are listed in the caption. . The sloon closed on Decemebr 1, 1865 after serving upwards of 900,000 soldiers. The lively print shows the troops serendaded by a marching band and cheered on by an enthusiastic crowd. Large folio lithograph with full original hand color. Approximately 18 1/2 x 28 1/2 inches. Excellent original condition with full untrimmed margins.
