J.F. Herring, Sr. "Full Cry" Herring's Hunting Scenes, London: 1867, Set of Four $8,500. Print

John Frederick Hereing Sr. "Full Cry"“Full Cry”

John Frederick Herring, Sr. (1795-1865) is considered one of Great Britain’s foremost sporting painters. His artistic life began humbly as a sign painter and coach driver, but was soon recognized for his great talent. His fame and finances were assured when he was commissioned to paint sporting scenes for the Duc D’Orleans, the Duchess of Kent, as well as for her daughter Queen Victoria. Herring’s wonderful paintings were translated into prints which were quite popular then as now. “Full Cry” is one of a complete set of four framed engravings. This magnificent set details the various stages of the fox hunt, not only illustrating this lively sport, but offering a view of 19th century English country side.

Elephant folio aquatint engraving with full original hand color and gum arabic details, full untrimmed margins.

Archivally matted and framed measuring approx. 26 ¼” x 38 ½.”
