Pratt Gymnasium at Amherst College, Harper's Weekly, New York: 1885, $225. Print

Pratt Gymnasium at Amherst College, Harper's Weekly 1885W. P. Snyder, "The Pratt Gymnasium at Amherst College"

The late nineteenth century periodical Harper's Weekly was widely read and enjoyed by the reading public. Before photography became commonplace, newspapers, guidebooks and periodicals were illustrated with wood engravings. The magazine employed illustrators who would travel and sketch any major event be it political, social or sporting. Many of the best artists of the day were employed by these magazines. A.B. Frost, Thomas Nast, Winslow Homer and Frederic Remington are just a few of the names of famous American artists whose work appeared in Harper's Weekly. They produced beautiful images that are technically superb original nineteenth century prints, invaluable for the historical information and the glimpses into the daily life of the period. This is a wonderful record of late 19th century college life.

Wood engraving with modern hand color,
10 3/4" x 15 1/2" sheet size, clean impression in very good condition.
