“The Mammoth Trees of California (Calavera County) (Sequoia Giganta)” G.K. Skillmann, sc.
The great sequoia trees of California were discovered in the summer of 1855 by a hunter. Word of these natural wonders spread quickly. The news fascinated the public, and since newspapers had not yet turned to photographs for the illustrations of their stories, prints of the subject were created using a variety of engraving and lithographic techniques. The Cincinnati Weekly Times printed this chromolithograph using their ‘steam job color press’ in 1855. The huge size of the print is especially appropriate for the depiction of the giant trees. Chromolithograph. 20 ¼ x 26 ¼ inches, sheet. Framed in period moulding to finished size of 23 x 29 3/8 inches. Excellent condition.
