Philip’s Map of England and Wales…
Liverpool and London: George Philip & Son, c. 1850.

A large scale extraordinarily detailed map of England and Wales from a series of large dissected maps created by a father and son team of publishers in Liverpool and London. The finely engraved maps were backed on linen so that they could be easily folded without damage. As the extended title makes clear, they served as a ready reference for calculating “the distances from London and the principal sea ports showing the lines of Railway, Canals, Etc.”

31 ½ x 26 ¼ inches, overall.
Hand colored engraving backed with linen.
Good condition with browning along section edges as expected.
Complete with gold tooled and stamped boards. Cover detached and somewhat scuffed.

“Les Isles Britanniques our sont le Royaumes D’Angleterre…”
A wonderfully decorative map of England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland that also shows northern portions of coastal France, part of the Netherlands and the southern tip of Norway. The title is surrounded by an elaborately and beautifully engraved depiction of mermen on horseback, fishing nets, strong marine roping, a porpoise, herons, etc. capped by a seated figure of the sea god Neptune wearing a crown and holding a scepter.
Guillaume Delisle is the most famous French cartographer of the early 18th century. As a member of the Academie Royale des Sciences and later, the Premier Geographe du Roi, he had access to the most up to date geographical information and he included it in his important maps. This map was included in his
A New General Atlas
.
In this map all is depicted in enormous yet easy to read detail including town names, divisions of shires and provinces, the location of grand estates and chateaux, shoals and underwater trenches.
20 x 25 ¼ inches, sheet.
Engraving with original hand colored outlining.
Excellent condition with light overall patina.

The map handsomely details the British Isles described as Le Royaume D’Angleterre (England), Le Royaume D’Ecosse (Scotland), and Le Royaume D’Irlande (Ireland). It includes small islands off the south west coast of England, the Isle of Man, the “Etudes Westernes” or the Hebrides, the Aran Islands and the Isle of Skye and boundaries, city names, mountain ranges, and major bodies of inland water. A map legend located on the left side, written in French provides information concerning the history of the governance and religion of areas. An elegantly engraved cartouche surrounding the title area, includes men, horses, sheep and fish. An inset shows “Isles de Farre ou Ferro” and “Isles de S Chetland.”

A wonderful map for anyone with English, Scottish or Welsh ancestry studying their family’s mid 18th century genealogy.

Engraving with hand colored outlining.
28 3/8 x 30 ¾ inches, sheet.
A nice crisp impression in very good condition save small light stain at bottom center
