This large, attractive map with beautiful coloring focuses on Mexico, Baja California and Central America extending as far south as the Panama Canal but it also depicts the coast of Florida, the American Gulf coast, Cuba, Andros. Nassau, Eleuthera, the Bahama Islands and Jamaica. An inset at lower left provides an even more detailed depiction of all of the Bahamas, Cuba, the Cayman Islands, “S. Domingo”, Porto Rico, the Leeward and Windward Islands, south to Tortuga and the coast of Venezuela.
The lithographer, F. Moras of Philadelphia produced a remarkably detail and readable map based upon the information provided by W. H. Holmes.

This map of the Caribbean extends from central Florida to Honduras and the southernmost past of South America. It is centered on the island containing Hispaniola and Saint Dominque (now the Dominican Republic) the two countries not yet having been divided and shows the Bahama Islands (or Lucayes), The Greater Antilles (Cuba, Hispaniola and Saint Dominque the two countries not yet having been divided) the Cayman Islands, Jamaica, and Puerto Rico, the Lesser Antilles or Caribbees including the Leeward islands of St. Thomas, St. John, St. Croix, the Virgin Islands, Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anguilla, Saint Martin, Saint Barthelemy, Saba, Saint Eustatatius, Saint Kitts, Nevis, Barbuda, Antigua, Redonda, Montserrat, Guadeloupe, and Dominica and Windward Islands of Martinique, Saint Vincent, Saint Lucie, the Grenadines, and Grenada. The commodities exported from these islands made them important European possessions and the mapmaker has taken pains to note the ownership of each.

De Vaugony maps are noted for the beauty of the ornamental engraving surrounding their title areas. In this case, merchant vessels, fishing nets, a collection of sea shells and wind blowing cherubs.

The island is the focus of this crisply engraved and detailed map with the “Partie Francoise” (Haiti) and the “Partie Francoise” (now the Dominican Republic) clearly shown as well as rivers, good anchorages, topographical information and observations, copper mines, settlements, locations of churches, etc. The detailed depiction extends to Cap Maisy and the eastern most portion of Cuba, the Turks and Caicos, Great and Little Inagua Island, Silver Bank and adjacent “Mouchoir Carre.”

Wonderful large format map of the West Indies/Caribbean from Henry Charles Carey and Isaac Lea’s important American Atlas published in Philadelphia in 1822. These “Carey and Lea” maps as they are known, are highly prized not only for their comprehensive cartographical information, but for the text that brackets each map offering detailed description of each state, territory, or area. The atlas was so popular that it was issued in six editions in English, French and German between 1822 and 1827. A wonderful map with a some discoloration from the glues used in the binding process along the centerfold. This is typical of these maps.

Nicholas Bellin (1703-1772) the map and chart maker to the King of France, created this beautiful large scale antique map depicting the island of St. Kitts in the West Indies. The map provides clear detail of the parishes, towns, rivers, ports, harbors and topographical details. It appeared in Bellin’s Le Petit Atlas Maritime.

Wonderful example from Joseph Hutchin Colton’s well received atlas titled General Atlas with Descriptions, which contained one hundred seventy steel plate maps and plans, of which 45 document the United States of America. The atlas is a compilation of earlier maps and surveys and is remarkably up to date. This map is replete with information. Starting from its accurate descripion of Florida, it describes the Yucatan peninsula, Central America, Grenada and Venezuela, along with Cuba, Hispaniola, Jamaica, the Bahamas, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands and the “Lesser Antilles.” So much accurate information, the map is astonishingly contemporary. It is pretty as well with its strapwork decorative border and lovely original color.  A terrific gift for the sailor, or lover of soft breezes and sultry nights!
