Kawase Hasui (1883–1957) is one of the great masters of the Shin Hanga movement, his art declared a Living National Treasure by the Japanese government. Hasui’s interest in Japanese woodblock prints developed during his apprenticeship with the famous Japanese painter, Kaburaki Kiyokata. His intense blue night scenes and prints of snowfall or rain are hugely popular with vivid coloring and entrancing natural beauty. He traveled throughout Japan sketching scenic landscapes. Watanabe’s wood carvers would make the blocks for printing.
