“A View of the Town and Island of Nantucket, Massachusetts”
A lovely small view of the town of Nantucket as seen from Shimmo, across the harbor. Tall masted sailing ships ply the waters with many buildings lining the wharves and extending into the densely packed center of town. There are tall churches and the impressive library called The Athenaeum which the author of the text below states is reason enough to visit the island. The text extolls the health benefits of the fine bracing air and excellent water of the island. He describes the town as “a busy place; the people possess the most enterprising genius” and devotes a paragraph to the town of Siasconset.
