Plate 2 depicting Andromeda, Pegasus, Apuarius, Caper,Piscis Notius, Cetus, Triangulum…

18th century celestial/astrological engraving in blue and gold/yellow gouache watercolor on laid paper. Although there are no identifying markings, we believe this plate is from a scarce folio paper issue of Flamsteed's celestial atlas of the 1750s.

John Flamsteed (English 1646-1719) was one of the most influential of 18th century astronomers. Born into a prosperous family and largely self-taught, his extensive studies resulted in his being appointed the first Astronomer Royal by King Charles II with the Royal Observatory at Greenwich built for him to continue his observations of the heavens.  His main achievements were the preparation of a 3,000-star catalogue, Catalogus Britannicus, and a star atlas called Atlas Coelestis both published posthumously.
