"Henbury the Seat of Simon Harcourt Esq"

Joannes Kip ( 1653-1722) was a Dutch draftsman engraver and print dealer. Together with Leonard Knyff he made a speciality of engraved views of  English manor homes.  This fine topographical engraving was included as one of the engraved illustrative plates for Kip’s Britannia Illustrata: Or Views of Several of the Queens Palaces, as Also of the Principal seats of the Nobility and Gentry of Great Britain, Curiously Engraven on 80 Copper Plates, London (1707, published in the winter of 1708–9). These views are widely considered to be among the most important early English topographical works. Great care and detail were used in the creation of each engraving. Each estate is seen from a “bird’s-eye view,” with great attention given to minute architectural nuances and the natural surroundings. Figures and coaches were included to lend perspective and scale.
