Towards the end of the 19th century, Belgium warested control of the orchid market from Great Britain and Brussels became the center od cultivation. The Belgian government sent Jean Linden to Central and South America to collect and document new varieties. His collection grew to over 1100 specimens. in 1885 he began publication of a comprehensive work on orchids entitled Iconographie des Orchidees. The work contained lovely chromolithographed plates of orchids by de Pannemacker and Severyns.
