(James Laurence (1781-1813) was an American Naval officer. His career with the navy began in 1798 but he is best known for his roles during the War of 1812.  He successfully commanded the sloop of war the USS Hornet but his ship the USS Chesapeake was disabled by the HMS Shannon. Laurence was mortally wounded in the action and it is said that his dying words were "Don't give up the ship!"
