Samuel Augustus Mitchell was a prolific Philadelphia publisher who produced various atlases of the United States and the world in the second half of the 19th century. Mitchell's maps were lithographed and well colored and always included a decorative floral border. This particular map includes a detailed inset of Chicago. The information on Mitchell's maps was accurate and up-to-date. They are collected today because of their attractiveness and affordability.
