(Plantlike Animals) “Vermes” “Order Zoophytes  - Genus Tubularia” (Plate I)
T. Magnifica (Magnificent Tubularia)

A beautifully engraved and striking image from the vermes section of Abraham Rees’ encyclopedia.  The ambitious work was published in 39 volumes divided into 100 different subject sections. The extended title of the work says it all - “The CYCLOPAEDIA; or, Universal Dictionary of Arts, Sciences, and Literature by Abraham Rees… with the assistance of eminent professional gentlemen. Illustrated with numerous engravings, by the most distinguished artists.”  We have a particularly nice selection of some of the most desireable plates of sea creatures including lobsters, shells, coral,  jelly fish and squid.

Each plate bears the date and place of publication and the name of the engraver.

The framing and matting possibilities are endless from contemporary treatments to antique ones. Great design possibilities. Especially effective when grouped.

8 ¼ x 11 inches, sheet.
Copperplate engraving.
Excellent condition.
