"Convent of the Grand St. Bernard"

The magnificent beauty and topography of the Alps was one of the highlights of the "Grand Tour."  It was not only the well heeled "tourists who visited, but the English painters who popularized the alpine view. The work of J.M.W Turner,  William Bartlett along with count- less others romanticized the spectacular landscape. This finely detailed engraving of the St. Bernard Pass and hospice with pilgrims making their way through the snow, was included as an illustration to Swiss Scenery from Drawings by Major Cockburn, published London 1820.
