In the first quarter of the 19th century Britain was a mighty power proud of her accomplishments and anxious to display her wealth and culture. William Pyne produced a number of works for British and foreign audiences celebrating these wonders. His chosen medium of hand colored aquatinting allowed the artists and engravers to capture an amazing amount of fascinating detail concerning architecture, clothing, and activities of everyday life. This engraving was included in The History of the Royal Residences of Windsor Castle, St. James's Palace, Carlton House, Kensington Palace, Hampton Court, Buckingham House, and Frogmore. Beautiful trompe-l'oeil painting on the ceiling.
