Plate 202 “Purple Auricula”
James Andrews (1801–1876) was an English botanical artist who contributed to a number of botanical publications. Some of his best botanical illustrations appeared in this publication titled The Floral Magazine printed and hand water colored between 1860-68. He also contributed illustrations to other books such as Trees, Plants, and Flowers: Their Beauties, Uses, and Influences, Flora's Gems, Ornamental Foliated Plants, and The Illustrated Bouquet. In addition, Andrews also taught flower painting to young ladies. Andrews has been overlooked as one of the better botanical artists of his time due to the fact that the majority of his work appeared in non- scientific illustrated publications. These lithographs printed by the leading English lithographic printing firm of the time are beautifully rendered and colored.
