This beautiful image of a camellia is a striking example of
the supremacy of the French in the field of botanical illustration
and another instance in which a benefactor, skillful artists and
engravers, and an experienced publisher combined forces to create
works of spectacular beauty. The Italian born Berlese, was the world's leading authority on camellias. He commissioned the French artist J. Jung to draw the hundreds of varieties of camellias growing in Berlese"s expansive gardens and hothouses. This artist, in collaboration with a team of skilled French engravers and an experienced Parisian printer, produced stipple engravings that were so brilliantly colored and finely engraved that the works rival those of his illustrious contemporary, Pierre Joseph Redoute.
