These unusual antique prints are renowned for the intricate designs and extraordinary decorative borders that literally frame the image. Many, such as this one have a trompe l'oeil effect with the flowers and plants depicted in the picture extending beyond the frame. They are masterpieces of the engraver’s art. Scheuchzer was a founder of paleobotany and a professor of mathematics and physics. He traveled extensively and amassed one of the largest fossil collections of the 18^th century. 
In Physica Sacra he attempted to reconcile his literal interpretation of the Old Testament with scientific observations. The prints are based upon the work of well-known artists of the day including M. Fussli.  J.D.  Preissler, Corvinus, Sperling and Linz.
