French Provencal Fabric Design painting No 9, c. 1850.
Original watercolor samples of Provencal fabrics.
In the late 17th century brightly colored cotton fabrics arrived from India to the French port of Marseilles. These “Indiennes” as they were called were an instant hit and French fabric makers soon mastered the art of printing these brightly colored, botanical and geometirc designs on cotton fabric. (This same fabric is often referred to in England and the United States as chintz).
Our original gouache and watercolor miniature paintings were created c. 1850 just as synthetic purple dyes were invented becoming hugely popular for fabrics and interiors.
Each watercolor is an original miniature painting.
