Jean-Charles Delafosse (French 734–1789) was a French decorative designer, engraver and architect and a pivotal figure in the Rococo and early Neoclassical movements which significantly influenced the decorative arts and architecture of the day. Rococo style, with its emphasis on asymmetry, fluidity, and ornamental exuberance, was at its zenith, Delafosse’s work came to embody a transition towards the more structured and classical elements that would define Neoclassicism. He issued three works filled with descriptive engravings:
“Nouvelle Iconologie Historique ou Attributs Hiéroglyphiques” [New Historic Iconology or Hieroglyphic Attributes], “Décorations, Sculptures, Orfévreries et Ornements divers” [Decorations, Sculptures, Goldsmithing and Various Ornaments] and “Ameublement” [Furniture].

This engraving of a very decorative bed was included in the Furniture volume which also contained examples of vases, clocks, tables, andirons, chandeliers, lamps, chairs, etc.
