This large charcoal drawing by Peter Moran is untitled but strikingly similar to a scene and subject that Moran revisited many times between 1887 and 1907, all identified with the title “Lowing Herd.” The previously identified works include three states of an etching, two oil paintings and a watercolor. David Wright in Domestic and Wild: Peter Moran’s Images of America (#106) identifies the location as probably the Bucks County area near Edison.
The foreground scene includes 4 cows and a calf crossing a stream. They are accompanied by a dog and a man in farming clothes with a straw hat. He carries a tool across his shoulders. The low horizon of the work emphasizes the sense of an expansive pastoral setting. The setting is most likely Bucks County, Pennsylvania near Edisto.
