"Bickham's Musical Entertainer"
This hand colored copperplate engraving was the frontispiece/title page to George Bickham’s, Musical Entertainer, printed between 1737-1739. The two volumes contained engravings with of English contemporary songs set to the music of Handel, Purcell, Hayden, Corelli and others. It was the first work of its type in England. The title page is very decorative, featuring the muse “Calliope” of Greek mythology. Calliope (meaning beautiful voice) was the most prominent of the nine sister goddesses who presided over poetry, song, and the arts and sciences.
